Bookkeeper & clerk at an insurance company. In the 1920 U.S. census, and after his mother passed away in 1914, John and his sister Josephine were recorded next door to their family home (228 Pleasant St.) at Thomas Wheelen's rooming house at 216 Pleasant. That left the old Barnes home for their sister, Nellie (Barnes) Dunn, and her family of six.

Josephine passed away in 1923 and John moved in with the Dunns before the 1930 census was taken. He had not married by that point.
